The great PTO coup: Why MORE people should work from home

Sometimes I think more people should follow the example set by my wife and me and work from home. Actually, I should amend that: I think more people who are at home already should try working.

Seems that too many people have too much time on their hands.

I work from home in a nice suburb of Chicago. Our overpriced home sits in a nice neighborhood with kind, helpful neighbors. They’re the type who bring food over when someone is ill, or agree to babysit on an hour’s notice. Good people.

But some of the stay-at-home folks here …

Last week, the members of our local school’s PTO overthrew the organization’s president. Luckily, it was a bloodless coup. Seems the president had become a bit of an ogre, demanding that everything be done her way. She also took to shouting at others during PTO board meetings.

An example of the former president’s sins: Following a successful Halloween party at our local school — all organized by volunteers from the PTO — the president circulated a note to all board members about the mistakes that were made. Everyone loves hearing about their mistakes, especially when they’re spending hours planning and hosting an event for free.

It seems to me, that all this could have been avoided had the president taken on a part-time work-from-home job. She would have been too busy to nitpick. She would have been too tired to scream and holler at her fellow PTO board members. She might even have remembered that the PTO is a volunteer organization, where perfection is not required.

So let’s hear it: More work-from-home jobs, fewer PTO presidents with extra time on their hands.

Interesting articles. Good Luck to you both. I am currently trying to find more work from home, as it doesn’t seem to be paying me to spend the gas, and car maintenance to drive to work. Not to mention, I would love to be able to stay home with my children more. Enjoy them while they are young, so to speak.
