Doing her part for Democracy

Today is one of those juggling days: My wife has agreed to work one of our local polling places as an election judge. It’s the first time she’s done this, and it’s quite a commitment: She has to be at our local public library — her assigned polling place — from 5 a.m. until about 8 p.m. That’s quite a long day.

That means I’ll be juggling the tasks of watching our 1-year-old son and trying to get some freelance-writing done. This won’t be an easy day. Our little guy has now learned to walk up stairs, so there is now nowhere in the house he can’t get to. Yes, I should have done a better job baby-proofing. But he’s our second child. You know how lazy you get with the baby-proofing on child number 2.

The inconveniences today, though, are well worth it. We should all cherish our right to vote. And this year we should be happy that we have two worthy candidates for president. This is the first time I can remember actually liking both major candidates for office. It’s a big change from the years when I disliked both candidates … like four years ago, for instance.

I think it’s important for us to support the election process, especially since both my wife and I do work from home. We have no excuse not to volunteer, to help out in the community. Sure, it means getting a little less work done today, but I’ll just extra hard tomorrow.

So remember, folks, if you haven’t voted yet, get out there. And proudly wear those “I Voted” stickers!
